Crx/civic Motors

Hey, I'm probably gonna be buying a CRX or a Civic (Maybe hatchback) soon. What should I be looking for in a motor? I come from the other end of the spectrum with American cars so I have no idea about Honda engines or anything. 350 seems a bit different than B16
Heh, I know what a B16 is and a B18, and I know they're great motors, but when I go out and buy a CRX or Civic (Looking for I think it's second gen CRX, 88-91 or whatever or the 6th gen Civic, the '92-95) what am I looking for? I don't know what the notations mean, the DX, EX, etc, etc. I want to get the biggest, best possible engine I can w/o doing a swap right away. I know I can find a B16 in a Civic, but what year can I find it in? As well, how much would it run me and what is the notation for the Civic with the B16 in it? EX, DX?
Oh, also if I get a CRX (I like em the most) whats the biggest engine for those? I read something about D or whatever. My other question is, is it easy and cheap to hop-up a D series engine?
I just want something fast, heh heh.

well, if your looking to buy a civic, the only production year that came with the b16 motor is the 99-00 civic SI coupe. other than that, you can find a b16 in 94+ del sol DOHC VTEC. not other civics came equiped with the b16's, your gonna most likley have to do a swap. if you buy a crx, the best model is the SI. the motors in those cars are a d-series. either a d15, or d16. the main differences between the two are dicplacement...1.5 or 1.6. that and the 1.6 liter D16 has vtec.

if you really just want something fast, you can swap a B-series motor (b16, b18) into the crx. the b18 will most likely be a little bit cheap, and will have less HP but more torque than the b16 (due too more dicplacement. you will most likely be happy with the b18.

just a word of warning, when swaping motors from a d series to a b series, everything has to be changes, i.e., motor, tranny, axles, ecu, ect.

What kinda money would I be looking at for a CRX Si? I'm not looking at an engine swap right off. I don't really have the skill nor the extra funds to do something like that. Is it possible to hop-up a D series motor to a decent extent? Everytime I read something about a honda they're talking about B's and H's, so using problem solving the D must not be good, right? heh

Smoof - If you are in the market for a crx Si, the prices will range anywhere from around a grand to upwards of 4 or 5 depending on your area, how hard they are to find, and the over all condition of the car.

They are a dime a dozen around here in central ny yet I had my new one shipped to me for around 4Gs. It's incredibly built up though.

As for decking out the stock engines they come with, here's the scoop . . .

The under models come with the crap engines so you'll want to steer clear form them. If you get the Si, you will find that the engine that comes stock in that . . has a bunch of support. You can definately bump up the horsies doing the usual header, intake, exhaust thing. You can also get cams, gears, and other upgrades for it. The thing is, the more you spend on trying to bump up the stock hampster, you can save for a guinie pig swap like the b16 you were talking about earlier, lol

Another alterantive to throw into it would be the ZC motor,if your looking for a swap alternative.There is the SOHC(Single over head Cam) of the DOHC ZC.
Basically they are JDM (Japenese Domestic Market) D series motors.Not as much aftermarket support,but cheaper,less work to put in and depending how fast you wanna be,still fun.
