Just adding a muffler isn't going to give you any perfonmance at all if you don't change the stock piping.

A simple muffler welded on is rice, period! I'm sure you can afford an Apexi N1 catback exhaust, they got for about $165 on Ebay. Or better yet, my personal choice would be an Apexi WS Series catback exhaust, they go for about $340 on Ebay.

Make a smart decision, you're talking about your Civic here.

Here's the problem... the stock exhaust systems rely a LOT on the muffler to keep things quiet. If you just weld on a straight muffler like most performance aftermarket catbacks have, you'll get a really buzzy bumblebee sounding exhaust. You know what I'm talking about, right?

If you want the deep sound of the expensive (relatively, to you) catbacks, you're going to want to run larger pipes, or at the very least a very long resonator section (Magnaflow works well here) right after your catalytic converter, then weld in a a straight muffler in place of your stock muffler. That gets expensive though, especially on your budget.

The cheapest way to get a good sound and just a tad of extra performance by only swapping the muffler would be to get something that's not a straight through can. I would recommend buying a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler and having that put in place of your stock muffler. It's only a 3 chamber S curve, so it still flows very well, but it will block out most of the high pitched bumblebee noise that you don't want. You can usually score them for about $30-40 each- slightly more if you want stainless steel.

Dynomax makes good quality stuff, so you know you'll be getting a good muffler. I've heard Civic exhausts set up with all stock hardware except for the Dynomax Super Turbo, and they actually sound very good.
