as far as i know.. JL never made any free air speakers... so i dont know what he did. As for free air speakers in general.. theyre pretty weak. The bass sucks.. and the sound quality isnt too hot either. But seeing as how you bought a Bazooka tube.. you dont seem to be too concerned with having alot of bass. I know kicker made some pretty decent free air speakers. not sure if they still do. I say you just throw some 6x9's back there.. and get a sealed enclosure. Mabye 2 Kenwood cyclone (i think thats the name; theyre blue) and a decent 200 watt amp... and youd be pleased. wont set you back too much either. Circuit City/Best Buy usually sells themsubs buy one get one free. prolly $300 max total for everything.

As for free air speaker quality... its not that great. Unless you get a really good one.. but again... you said your on a budget.. so im just suggesting a few things that should probably please you. I had 2 SoundStream USA 10's before.. not the best.... but ill be damned if they didnt rattle my truck...along with the windows in my house. So all in all.. i wouldnt (IMO) waste your time/money on free air speakers. Youd have to dynomat (really well) your entire truck.. and fill alot of holes to make them sound good. Free air speakers a merely using your trunk as the enclosure, instead of a box. |

yeah, when i said a budget i meant i didn't want to spend $1200 on a fiberglass enclosure. i've got money to spend but not money to burn. also, no i don't want earth shaking bass, just basically want my cake, cash, hendrix, and occasional dmx to sound pretty good.
right now i just have an Alpine CDM-7874 head unit, a pair of Alpine SPS-1629S speakers, and dome tweeters. |

ok.. seeing as how i love JL Audio.. and would recommend them to anyone.. i say you spend the money.. get like 2 JL 10W0(4 ohm SVC)... and a nice 200ish watt amp.. JL has a 250 watt amp.. which would be damn near perfect with those 2 subs... if you want to get a little better.. get some 10W3's... theyre a little more expensive.. but well worth it IMO. i had a set... and i must say i was very happy with them.
That right there would add a nice kick to your music.. not too much.. not too little. |

kyle, thanks for the info but i just don't want a box in my trunk.
JL Audio did make a free-air sub called the JL Audio 8IB4 infinite baffle sub. might have to find a pair of those. ![]() |

The 8ib4 isn't a bad sub at all. My boss had my install a pair in the rear deck of his bmw in the steath boxes. He is running them off of the mono section of a 500/5 and it sounds really nice, if you are looking for just a little bit of punch, but not impress the neighbors loud, it is definitly a way to go. Even though you said no box in the back, the stealthbox for our cars doesn't take up much room and is worth looking in to.
