My friends cousin however won the dB drag contest for Higehst SPL overall and set a state record with 198 dB Coming off of a Alpine head unit, 6 Type R 15's and 4 alpine amps, in his monster truck xterra (34" Mickey thompsons and a 9" body lift). His system kicked so hard that his rear windshield wiper arm flew off. After his first run they told him to take off the dinky little ear plugs he had on and gave him a pair of those airport runway headphone style ear plugs.
Yeah no way he got 198 he would have had to drop 30,000 to 40,000 grand just in reinforces to the car it's self. 158 is much more like what it really would have it. Plus I could be wrong but I don't think current SPL metering systems can read up to 198, I thought that about 180 was there topping out point. Andy is that still true?

Of course- that's about as oversimplified as you can get. I don't want to start spewing off about amplifier design, wave forms, IC capabilities etc in a forum where people won't really know what they're reading. I'll leave that to discussions between me and my EE friends.[/b]
Why not I would have just to have some fun! [/b]
he has reinfoced lexan all around except the windshield. I may be off with the 198..its was some really astronomical number tho...possibly 160 something they were handwriting the scores on the board, so I may not have the exact number, but in any case, its damn loud.

Not to get completely OT here, but I just blew out 2 of my speakers (1 alpine type-R 6.5 [SPR-176A] and 1 alpine type-R 6x9 [SPR-694A]) with my 700watt alpine amp [MRV-F540]... The thing that I dont understand is that this happened within a week or two of having my sub installed... I have been rocking the speaker/amp combo for a few months and everything was gravy, but almost immediatly after I get my bass hooked up, the shit starts tearing up!!! I dont turn the volume up any louder than I did before, so why did this happen? Could it be faulty installation, because I had a shop do it for me and if its their fault, I want to get them to replace my shit ASAP. Thanks in advance guys...

That would be more like 158 db. 198 will probably never even happen in a competition vehicle. Just to be in the 170 db range, you need very thick lexan windows, and electromagnetically sealed doors just to keep the thing sealed.
This is a good point. Isn't the world record like 175.7 or something like that?

Okay I think we make need a little more info here. You say that you blew out one 6 1/2 and one 6x9...did they happen to be on the same side of the car? Second, how did the shop hook up the subwoofer amp?

Either way I would for sure take it bad to them and ask them to fix it.

I wasn't trying to bash them at all...if someone ask I will say they are a good company and good brand, but personal I wouldn't owe them because of the way they sound. Thats not bashing thats just a personal opinion thats all.

The speakers were on opposite sides, and I dont know exactly what you mean by "how" they hooked up the amp; Im not all that well versed in car audio as you can probably tell...

I think he means "was the amp wired to the speakers in series, parrallel or stereo" correct me if I'm wrong here.
