First off, I had a system installed recently at a local audio shop and found out my amp was bad. I didn't have the money at the time to get a new amp from them, but they told me I needed around 400 watts to push my 2 subs. So basically, I'm asking whether I should get a 2-channel, multi-channel, or mono amp. Could somebody explain it?

first off.. what kinds of subs are they? Single or dual voice coils?

Dont bother with a multi channel amp for subs. those are usually 4 channel amps.. some times 5 (4 for the highs/mids and one for a sub) but those usually cost alot.. and the sub channel has pretty pathetic power ratings. Normally around 100-200 amps.. so it would be too little for your application.

Your best bet is a mono amp. Or a single channel amp. All you have to do in this case is bridge the speakers (IE wire them together) and theyll both share the 1 channel. Agian.. this is why i asked whether the subs are SVC/DVC, and how many ohms per sub? This is a key factor in wiring it up. Go too low of an impedence (or ohm level load) and youll kill your amp, go too high.. and your wasting your time.

Then youve got your 2 channel amps. Again.. good for subs. In this scenario.. you just wire one sub to one channel. This gives you the ability to fade the speakers from left to right [sometimes(IMO its pointless with bass)] This setup (2 channel) can sometimes give you a few more wiring options.

Personally.. IMHO... get the mono (or class D) amp. Its usually the best bang for the buck, There isnt as much involved with them, so to speak. And 9 times out of 10... youll get more "raw power" out of it.

Hope this helped...

If you would be interested in an amp (used) let me know, my fiance is selling some audio components, that are in decent condition and work great. He has two Kenwood amps that he is looking to sell.

the only two companies ive delt with for amps in the past have been rockford fosgate and audiobahn. outta the two, i would go with audiobahn. i blew the other two rockfords from daily use, and not needing all that much power. the audiobahn lasted a while(until it got stolen actually) and i never had a problem with it. they look nice too. MTX isnt too bad either, i would try them.
