You're probably clipping the shit out of the amp.
When you tune an amp, put the head unit to the most power in the settings. Up the bass all the way, mid and highs the same also, etc. Then turn up your gain on the amp until it distorts, and back down on it just a tad. Then lower the setting on the head unit accordingly. The amp is going into protect because it's getting a clipped signal, and putting itself into protect. I don't think it's seeing the wrong ohm load, because if it was it would of fried by now, and would turn off within a minute or so. Also, JL makes nice amps, but they're over priced and over rated. The 500/1 will do 500 RMS, but no where near 700. I benched my 500/1 at 573 rms, at two ohms. |

Your amp is "clipping" on the bass heavy songs. The best things to do, other than matching up your equipment better (similar RMS power), is to reset your gains and your audio adjustments on your head unit. This won't fix it completely, but it may keep your music more consistent
