Usually change my own oil on my '97 EX .
But yesterday was in a rush and had it changed at a local place.
I was informed that the aluminum threads on the pan were stripped a little, so an longer plug with more threads than the original was installed.
The techncian said it was just a matter of time before the oil pan needed replacement. Car has 79,256 miles on it.
Cost 300-400 George Washingtons.
Never heard of this before
Any experiences with this situation here??
Thanks,
Bob

i dont know. id say they probably cross-threaded it putting in the original, pulled it back out. then put one in like you were saying with more threads, to cover their ass. places like that dont give a shit if your threads are stripped, so they probably arent going to help you out by giving you a new plug.

Drill it out and tap it yourself. Even if you buy the tools to do it, you can still do it under a hundred beans.

You can usually get an oversized plug and you just need to tap the hole for the larger size. Also, you can probably pick up a used pan for dirt cheap. Just check around some import shops, ebay, or honda-tech.

Found it, ie
""Another well known pair of automotive writers who are syndicated in newspapers across the country recently said that stripped oil pan plugs in Honda's couldn't be repaired and that the only solutions were to buy a new oil pan or an oversized plug.

Wrong!!! There's a Texas based engine parts manufacturer will not remain anonymous (Enginetech) who has a solid bushing repair kit specifically made for that application, and it does work.""

Thanks again to all,
Bob

Sorry to hear that.....You could do numerous things. number 1:Use a tap to rethread it number 2: take a bolt a bit bigger and jam it in there....(Wouldn't reccomend this method) 3: take it to the machine shop, they will be able to fix it for like 100 or less..4:Never change your oil, ever. (ahaha)5:Tell them it's their responsibiltiy to fix and they'd better buy you a new one.

Do number 5, and if you have an EX, send me the spare oil pan. I'm in need of one for when I've gotta take this turbo kit off. Thanks

one thing i know is that if the pan is stripped then the plug is gonna be all messed up too. if you can get the plug cuz in my 91 hatch i have to replace the plug every 3 or 4 changes cuz the threads get all stripped up. thats just from my experience. could be wrong. def stop taking ur car to the quik lube too. those guys just dont give a shit. change ur own oil, its the only way to go.
