I know some ppl here will say if i have to ask i shouldnt be painting, but those ppl all started somewhere. also any other stuff he needs to get started would be great to hear about.

For a first gun, I would get one with a 1.3-1.4mm tip. That will work good for an all around gun (priming, sealing, basecoats, and clears) I have a Sharpe Cobalt gun that I use since I only paint one car a year on average. Devillbis makes a Finish line gun which is good for the money as well.

I went to college for a year and a half for auto body to learn to paint. You might do some checking at book stores for a decent book. You also might want to check in to taking a class at a local community college if it is offered. Many times you can take just a night class to learn some basic stuff and the tools and supplies you get to use make things very nice.

most every compressor can get up to 120 psi. The thing you want to look for is you will want something with a decent tank too keep from the compressor kicking on and running constantly. You will also just want to see how large the compressor is. A dual stage compressor is very nice, but quite expensive compared to others. As long as you have access to 220 volts, it is very wise to purchase a compressor that runs on 220 if you are using it for auto body applications.

Sata and Devilsbill are good guns. You want a nice 15 gallon compressor tank and run 40psi when spraying. You don't necessarily need two guns for painting, although it's recommended because primer is hard to clean. This is just some information I have picked up in the past few days from very helpful people on honda-tech. I'm getting ready to do body work and paint on a donor car (86 Mercury Capri) in my house down south. Hopefully all goes well.

Although the best way to learn is experience. You can read, read and read and 'know' the concept, but without that first hand experience, it's nothing. It's like driving stick, you 'know' the concept, but when you first sit in the driver's seat, you're taken back.

If anything, don't practice on something that you would care if you messed up. Go to a junk yard and pick up some fenders or hoods or whatever floats your boat to practice on. Thats what I plan on doing.

look for a nice gravity fed gun..

than just a regular gun for primer..

I worked at a body shop for a year.. they let me primer stuff.. But mostly i just sanded and stripped stuff.. cool job though.
