i as talking with a friend of mine at work the other day and he mentioned that i should buy pistons and raise the compression on my B16 and then throw a zex kit on the motor. i always thought high compression and nitrous wasn't exactly a good thing. any input on this would be great.

Compression doesn't matter much. High or low compression ratios can work quite suitably with nitrous oxide provided the proper balance of nitrous and fuel enrichment is maintained. Nitrious kits are used in applications from relatively low compression stock type motors to Pro-Modifieds, which often exceed 15 to 1. Generally, the higher the compression ratio, the more ignition retard, as well as higher octane fuel, is required.

just remember dont advance your timing.. detonation and fuel cut-out sucks with nitrious

Nitrous absolutely LOVES high compression. Just make sure it's properly tuned through retarded ignition timing, colder plugs, etc. Detonation is a bitch, but detonation on boost/nitrous is a huuuuuuuuuge bitch.

Yeah.. nitrous loves high compression..
But a B16 already runs pretty good compression.

I like the thought of forged pistons because they can put up with a bit more stress and detonation then stockers.. Might as well bump the compression a little while your at it.

Though its not required for you to raise compression to run nitrous on your motor, if you got the time/money and start looking for more power, its just another step you'll take eventually.

so i was just talking this over with the guy building my h22. nitrous does love high compression. this is because nitrous oxide breaks into oxygen and nitrogen under either high pressure or high temperature. (in your engine, you have both)

however, just like boost with a higher compression car, nitrous gets tougher to tune as well. detonation becomes just as much of a problem. if you have a high performance engine and you ping, well chances are good you are just about screwed. so, that said, my suggestion would be to keep it around 10:1 or 10.5:1 and run rich and slowly lean it out. i am building for nitrous myself and i am going 10.5:1 since i want pretty good normal street driving.

anyway, thats my 2 cents.

Don't worry, I'll probably be spraying on my 12.x:1 compression.

can you run pump gas with 12:1?

we only get 91 octane here and i dont think that you can safely do that. but there is a good chance i am wrong.

hahaha, what can i say, im a slow learner.

if i remember right, you have 93 octane in TX, or at least where you live.

12:1 compression i think can be done with pump gas if my memory serves me right. but it is at just about the limit, right?

or, was that a hint to read a faq.... guess im heading over there now.

One of my friends runs 13:1 on 91 octane. Of course, he has a J&S knock sensor to take care of his timing and say to detonation.
