so the mis firings were probably blow by

or the missfiring did the damage to the rings???

I think it was his motor running super lean, causing the misfiring, and detonating...frying the rings.[/b]
My thoughts exactly.. possibly cracked ringlands

My suggested fix.. stock type rebuild.. clean everything up.. new seals all around.. Bore/hone cylinders.. New bearings.
New stock pistons and rings(1st oversize). Have the pistons coated. Thermal barrier on top, and Dry lubricant on the skirts, heat dissipating on bottoms.

Not building as much for super power as for reliable daily driver, and keeping costs low

If the ringlands are ok when he pulls them, he can just get rings/bearings and a hone job...shouldn't need to go oversize. If the ringlands are bad, he might as well just go aftermarket. Stock pistons plus the coatings are probably going to cost near a set of forged aftermarket pistons...but then he'd have to buy rods too.

you can run after market forged pistons on stock rods...you can no however do the opposite. run stock pistons on after market rods. if he added oil and it brought the compression up, it most likely does not have cracked ringlands...id recommend getting pistons just because...its a turbo motor and id rather have the reliability of a forged piston. besides they come with rings. and i mean its only 495 for a set of cp pistons.
I think you need to ditch the fmu and buy programmable ecu...it doesnt matter which...it just works better. and get it tuned!!! dont go out there and think you have all this stuff and your invulnerable. if you need any help..let me know ill help you out as much as i can.

I'm going to start pulling the motor apart tonight. can't i just replace the one piston , rings and bearing on the one cyl. I don't need a hone job unless the cyl wall is scratched right. That what my helms says anyway.

I just really don't have the money right now to do all the other work, I need my car up and running ASAP. at the end of the year i'll have more money to play wiht.

you need it up and running right away..my suggestion would be to re-build it and take off the turbo kit because you obviously dont have it tuned right. your just gunna have the same problem again if you leave it on there and put it back together the same way. you dont have a broken ring land most likely....if your compression came up when you added oil you wouldnt have a broken ringland. however i think its the direct opposite of what everyone is saying...i think you ran it pig rich...washed the cylinders and burnt up the rings...seems a more likely scenario to me. although you could have ran it really lean and burnt passed a ring. but most likely that would cause piston damage. take pictures when you take it apart ill be able to tell you from there.

Yeah, could be either or...extreme rich/lean. I figured it was lean because of his timing...pics are mandatory.

But I definitely agree that he should take it off for now and get the car running, and save his $ for a tunable engine management and some dyno time. Can't skimp out on the tuning...that's the most important part.

Well i'm going to start pulling it apart tonight. I'm going to replace everything with stock parts. All 4 sets of rings all new seals / gaskets. Get the block honed blah blah blah blah. I will 100% take pic's of the block / piston either tonight or monday, because i won't be around this weekend.
