Whats up fellas! I am back from the desert finally and decided on the motor I am going to get. I was debating the loved B18c motor and then decided I would go with the not so loved B18b. I figured the extra cost of buying the gsr could go into the engine of a LS and be much better and cost less in my opinion. As far as a tranny to get with the motor? I would want to do my average stop light race and track races as well as drive around town in the car. I wouldn't drive real long distances in the car either. Maybe 40-50 miles away tops. Gas consumption wouldn't be the big of an issue since I will not be traveling far away. I am thinking t3/t4 turbo or larger turbo if someone could tell me the pros and cons of the size difference compared to the tranny. I hear the b18b tranny is very good and can buy the complete engine for 1900 shipped or buy the long block and get a gsr tranny. I have read where the gsr tranny is beefier and better than the ls tranny and just the oposite. In any case which tranny do you all think is the best for turbo? By the way, a b18c5 with lsd has been an option as well if it would be good for my basic needs. Thanks for your support!

Well i went throw the same thing with my swap. First i had a GSR tranny on my LS and then went with the ls tranny. If you don't mind sitting at 5xxx rpm while crusing on the high way then go with the GSR (but remember the LS wasn't built for rev'ing high for long periods of time)
The LS tranny works great with my tubo, I don't even know if i would want any shorter gears then the LS already has, When fully spooled i go thru gears pretty quick, Also with longer gears you get to enjoy the boost more, Well i think so anyway. i could be just cruiing at 50mph in 3rd not spooled up at all then punch it be fully spooled in about 5 sec and be up to about 90 in no time before i need to hit 4th

i have no idea what gsr tranny you think you had...but at 5000rpms on the freeway i would have been at 90+mph. sounds like you had more along the lines of an si tranny. now, if the car isnt going to be driven out of town much and you dont cruise it on the freeway very often...i would say go with an si tranny...its geared more towards acceleration. personally i like my gsr, they are great for turbo cars. good medium between an si and a ls.

Is the si tranny like the type r tranny minus the lsd? I have read that for acceleration it would be type r, si, gsr, ls and just the opposite for gas mileage? So if thats the case would a type r tranny be good for me or are they not good/geared for turbo applications? Say I were to get a larger turbo, would that affect what tranny I would need to get since the spool and lag would be different compared to a smaller turbo? Also can lsd be applied to any b series tranny?

I agree with all of that.

a type r is basically its own gearing...it kinda has gearing a little bit like an si but it has gsr sized synchros. not really a good tranny for turbo. short short gearing and turbo dont go together really well. but the ls gears are too far apart and allow you to fall outta boost easily if you dont rev the motor high. thats why i would recommend a gsr tranny.

Yea i guess i agree with this, my boost does fall off just a bit before maxing the gear out,

I agree with all of that.[/b]
Same here. Get a GSR transmission for a boosted LS.
