Somethings you should buy new, but others I wouldn't waste an extra couple hundred dollars on a new part when you can get the same part for less from some guy cleaning out his garage. Just food for thought...

absolutly, im agreeing with that, but what im saying is that a person who doesnt know what good or bad used turbo parts look like is gonna be more likely to get dicked over and wind up with something that is crap. thats why in bo's case, because he has never done a turbo setup before i think he should invest the extra money in a kit that comes with everything so that he doesnt wind up missing something or gettin a broken or crappy part. i just think that in his case he is better off starting from new than peiceing it together. itll make things much easier on him and alot less stressfull. now things would be different with someone who has done it before and knows what they need and what they want. with a person like that i say hell yea go and piece together a turbo setup. ull save money and you will prolly be able to extract more power.

im pretty sure that i read in a couple of mags that they bought used turbos from like wrecked DSM's and shit

i know this wasnt the ? but, as for euro cars i dont think they would work at all cuz most are mounted under the motor, our gti was basically directly under and behind the motor. that car was a pos, but thats niether here nor there.

Joe is right, I have never done a turbo setup before, this will be my first. I am just learning everything that I can right now. I have another question, what are some powergain upgrades that I can do now, before the turbo setup, that arent going to be eliminated when I get the turbo kit installed? What can I buy? what should I not bother with?

i'm running the greddy 18G kit, i like having an internal WG. As for HMT. only reason i sugest them is because you can get hooked up with uberdata setup and chip burners for cheap. Plus they have alot of misc shit for sale. IE, bov's, piping, ic's and other non mechanical items that don't hurt being used.

As for what you can do now, just start prep work. Get an adjustable FPR and gauge, Start wiring you boost / a/f / oil pressure and other shit now. If you really want ot get ahead of the game, Order a wideband O2 now.

i dont recommend anyone that doesnt know how to tune to have a wideband a/f gauge in their car. it just makes them think, "well i see the air fuel is at this, i can just adjust it a little bit.." bad idea, besides if you leave them in the car all the time...they will just wear out, they honestly do not last that long.. Boost and oil pressure are the only gauges you need. I agree with some people though...peice the kit together, thats how i started out...the only thing i bought brand new was the turbo...now manifold turbo and wastegate are getting replaced for brand new items again. but the peices i bought before hand...im still using.

I'd get a new turbo, manifold, wastegate, and fuel management. Charge piping and intercooler, go used if you want. Wideband O2 is worthless unless you tune yourself. Any shop you go to tune will supply that during the tuning session, so you're wasting your $ at this point to buy one.

so just get my gauges? and you think I should wire them up before the install? is there anything like a cam or something along the lines of that, that I could get? I am just being precaution, and want to have a real smooth setup.

PS. should I replace my clutch before the install, if so, what kind of clutch do you recoment (I am rocking the d16 remember). Also should I do any lil stuff like that?
