If the engine takes a long time to warm up your thermostat is most likely stuck open.
If the engine is hot, use your hand to check upper radiator hose, if the hose isn't hot but the engine is then thermostat is stuck closed. Step by Step 1. disconnect negative battery cable (as always.) 2. Drain coolant (save coolant if it is relatively new) 3. follow upper radiator hose to the engine to locate the thermostat housing cover. 4. Loosen hose clamp, them detach the hose with pliers, twist off. (might as well inspect hose now because it would be an easy time to replace if necassary) 5. Disconnect the ECT sensor (coolant temp sens) 6. remove thermostat cover bolts and detach housing. (may need soft hammer) 7. note how it is installed with the jiggle pin up. 8. remove thermostat. 9. remove old gasket material (all of it) 10. install new rubber gasket over thermostat.. installation is the reverse of removal.. haha.. enjoy!!!! |
