At some point, your vehicle will need its o2 sensor replaced. Typically, you?ll know this is the case if your CHECK ENGINE light comes on, and the trouble code it throws is 1, 2, or 41. If this is the case, then you should purchase a new o2 sensor (Denso and Bosch are great brands), and follow the instructions below for successful completion:

Estimated time to complete: 15-30 minutes.

.) Purchase or rent an o2 sensor wrench set. These sets can typically be rented at places like AutoZone for a $15-30 deposit.

.) Allow engine to cool for about 20-30 minutes before working on it. This will save your hands from burns and blisters! Note: Don?t let the car cool completely, as the exhaust manifold will contract when it?s completely cool, making it difficult to remove the o2 sensor.

.) Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of your battery.

.) Begin by looking at the exhaust manifold area, following the wire coming out of the general area, as this is the electrical connector from the sensor. Disconnect this connector by using the tabs on the sensor?s electrical housing.

.) Using a 10mm socket, remove the four nuts holding the Exhaust manifold cover.

.) Take the socket from the o2 sensor wrench set you purchased or rented, and use it to unscrew the o2 sensor from the exhaust manifold.

.) Take your new o2 sensor, inspect it for any defects, and apply the Anti-seize compound that came with it over the threads of the sensor. This will save you lots of time removing it in the future.

.) Present the new o2 sensor onto the exhaust manifold, and screw it in place using the o2 sensor wrench set you purchased or rented.

.) Feed the new o2 sensor?s electrical connector through the hold on the exhaust manifold cover you removed at the very beginning of this project.

.) Screw the exhaust manifold cover back in place with a 10mm socket wrench.

.) Reconnect the electrical connector back to the engine?s harness.

.) Fire up the car and see if you get any trouble codes.

.) Congrats! You?ve just replaced your o2 sensor!
