Hey guys, my bro gave me a short shifter for my birthday. I successfully installed it in my ek coupe, but when I move left and right in neutral, it hits the exhaust pipe..has this happened to anyone before? It's the section where the short shifter meets the (shift linkage? i think that's what it's called). That section hits the heat shield of the exhaust pipe.

My thinking is that it is either:
1) because of the generic brand
2) because of B20Z swap

I think the b20 sits higher than the d16, which would pull headers up, pulling exhaust pipe up too. what do you guys think? I have a problem with the intake sticking out and pushing the wheel well against the tire when i turn too But the shifter is my main concern right now.

thanks guys,
-jess

you could just ket that ride and after a few thousand miles it will go away.
I had the same problem with my 96 sedan a few yrs ago, the new catback may or may not solve your problem.
just my 2 cents

the only time it doesn't run is when it's in neutral. when im in 3rd, 4th, and 5th, it constantly rubs makes an annoying sound unless i hold onto the knob. I'm thinking of taking off the midpipe and hammering down the heat shield or getting a mid pipe.

este: what did you do to fix it?

cam, same thing happened to me with my exhaust when i had to have it lengthened for my swap, it was angled to far up and rubed my shifter, just remove your heatshield (it does nothing anyways), and go to a muffler shop and have them make you a test pipe thats the same size as your exhaust piping and that should take care of your clearance issue, or you could always just beat it in...

problem solved by the nice folks at Intercrew =). while changing my transmission, phil also removed the heat shield for me, and it worked. no more vibrating =) just incase anyone else has this problem.

There is one other way to solve this problem.

I installed a sts in my eg hb and while testing it out, I encountered a friction rub on my custom built exhaust (2&3/4 inch s/s/piping)

I found it to be the stabalizer bar that hangs down off from the shifter/linkage. No matter how I wiggled it, it would rub.

Answer?

Plastma cutter! You can use a torch or sawzall too I suppose, haha I just cut it off and it worked fine.

Just 2 more useless cents tossed onto the table.

lates.

I ended up modifying the center exhaust hanger on my 00 EX. As a result the exhaust hangs about an inch lower in the center, but no more rubbing shifter.
