Ok.. lord knows i dont know an assload about turbos. i know the basics.. of how they work... but not much about how they perform... and i figured i'd put this here cuz its really not important... so what the hell...
Anyhow... lets say ive got a turbo on my car... running, i dunno... 7 PSI. One morning i decide i want to take a trip to my sisters house like 300 miles away. Should i leave the PSI the same... or turn it all the way down? Like, can you turn a turbo "off"? Is a turbo not a good idea for a car that i'd use in road trips a handful of times a year, along with daily driving? Before i waste any of my time researching any turbo's.. i want to make sure it'll be a feasible upgrade. thanks much <--- thats for you Julz ![]() |

1) yes you can turn the PSI almost all the way down, But your car is going to be slow ass hell.
2) taking long trips isn't bad on a turbo as long as you have a good cooling system and Oil. 3) short trips are worst then long trips. 4) i drove my 85AE 300ZXT back and forth from NJ to FL like 6 times in a 2 year time frame and never had any problems. |

Think of your turbo as an 'on-demand' power source. If you don't floor it, it basically is 'off'. Sure, the turbine/compressor wheel is spinning all the time, but if you aren't putting a serious load on the engine to produce a lot of exhaust gas, the turbo won't see extreme temps, or extreme rpms: two contributors to a shorter life. You mash the gas, you're using your turbo. You cruise on the highway, you're not using your turbo as much. It's perfectly ok to leave your PSI the same for long trips because if you're cruising, you won't even be in boost. It makes no difference.
Now, that said, putting tons of miles on your turbo without being able to have fun using it is senseless. It will wear out with age just like any other engine component. HTH

Crimson490.. Said it all about right..
Turbo's only "boost" when the engine becomes under load... any other time the engine is under vacume..
