i have a stuck open thermistat. how easy to do this myself? just drain coolant, take out radiator and find the old thermistat, swap it out and put the shit back together?? ive never messed with a thermistat before. a bit hesitant to start ripping shit apart. i would like to save $100 though, and do this myself.

If I recall correctly the themostat or at least the one I changed a looong time ago is located somewhere around the back of the engine. around the intake manifoild area but I may be incorrect, I changed the thermostat on my 96dx sedan but it has been so long that i dont remember too much of it.
I had that problem with that car and the fix was pretty much a simple repair. just find, replace, and restart...your situation may be different though.
I'm sure some one will come around and give you the correct answer.

alright here ya go:
If the engine takes a long time to warm up your thermostat is most likely stuck open.
If the engine is hot, use your hand to check upper radiator hose, if the hose isn't hot but the engine is then thermostat is stuck closed.
Step by Step
1. disconnect negative battery cable (as always.)
2. Drain coolant (save coolant if it is relatively new)
3. follow upper radiator hose to the engine to locate the thermostat housing cover.
4. Loosen hose clamp, them detach the hose with pliers, twist off.
(might as well inspect hose now because it would be an easy time to replace if necassary)
5. Disconnect the ECT sensor (coolant temp sens)
6. remove thermostat cover bolts and detach housing. (may need soft hammer)
7. note how it is installed with the jiggle pin up.
8. remove thermostat.
9. remove old gasket material (all of it)
10. install new rubber gasket over thermostat..
installation is the reverse of removal.. haha.. enjoy!!!!
