Help....car Died......again

well i left work early today and on the way home my car started to sputter kinda. i puched on the gas and it didnt do much. but being the dummy i am, instead of turning down my street, i kept going to see how she would do going around the block. well two blocks past my street, it completly died.

it cranks but wont turn over. i pulled out one of my spark plugs, put the wire on it and grounded. tried cranking it over,but it didnt spark. i friend told me to do this to test it. im assuming im not getting any spark to the plugs.

also, the last couple days, when i first start the car, i hear like a mechanical whine. kinda hard to explain. almost like an electric motor i guess. would that be the distributor going? if my altenator was bad, would that cause no spark at the plug?

luckily i live right next door to a mechanics shop. never used them before, but im gonna call them to see how much they charge to just diagnose the problem.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks everyone.

i brought it the mechanics. they charged me 60 bucks to diagnose the problem. survey says! it was the distributor. they wanted $380 for the distrubitor, 75 for labor, + the 60 bucks for diag. $515.00 total.

screw that. i went to autozone and bought a remanufactered one, lifetime warranty. for 180 + 90 coar charge charge. im gonna put it in with a friend of mine. maybe i'll even do my ery own DIY write up while we're at it.

ok, im reading the manual i downloaded. took me ten minutes just to find the page i needed.

it says to use a timing light to check timing. how do i do this, the manual didnt really say.
