My wife's 99 Corolla (don't hate the Toyota) is making a noise when she turns to the left. The sound is a very soft repetitive knocking, snd it only does it during low speeds. We can't tell where it's coming from because it's so soft that you can't hear it with the windows are down. I thought it was an unusual sound, and might have something to do with the suspension. I had her take it to the dealer since it's under warrenty still. They are now telling her that she needs new brake pads. I will replace them myself, but I don't think they could be causing this sound. Any opinions would be helpfull?

If the boot isn't ripped shouldn't it be OK? What should I be looking for?

I call the dealer and tell him I don't think it's the pads that are causing the noise. He tells me the rotors "flex" when turning and it's causing the pads to knock on the rotors. I told him no way because the sound is after the turn not during. He says that he still thinks it's the pads and the CV joints passed a visual inspection. This sucks because I think these guys are full of it. He also wanted to charge her $600 for a 60,000 mile check up. So I made sure to ask what their policy will be when I replace the pads myself and than bring it back with a knocking sound. Warranty work sucks ass! I don't feel like dealing with this hassle. I have to get this all done before I can leave for the Brickyard 400

it's your axles(CV joints). The dealership did a visual inspection of the axles the same way you did and said, "well the boots aren't ripped, so they must be good." Just tell them you are gonna hold them responsible if the CV joint should break on the highway, then they may change their tune about fixing it.

Fixing that would be very costly. Tell them to put it in writing that the CV joint is good.

As much as I hate to admit I am wrong, I'm going to. I took the Corolla home and replaced the pads like the dealer said to. Guess what, no more knock. I don't understand it, the clip that they said would force the pads to grip didn't have any wear, not one scratch. In fact there was a good 1/16 left before the clip could even touch the rotor. They were worn but not quite done.

I just don't underderstand how brake pads could make a knocking sound. Especially something that can't be heard outside the car. Guess I should just be happy the CV is good, right?

Thanks for all the replies I took the boot off just to be sure and could see no signs of wear.

Do we have a confused smily?
