Well, I swapped my auto transmission for a 5 speed and everything went well. I didn't have a manual ECU at the time, so I kept my auto one in and left the gear selector box thing hooked up so I could start the car. I got the 5 speed ECU today and I swapped it out for the auto one. However, when I went to start the car, it wouldnt start. Other than a bad ECU, is there any other possibility that could cause the car not to start? I appreciate any help.

It's a 99 Civic DX. The ECU is from either a 96 or 97. I know that there was a slight change between the 96-98 and 99-00 Civic ECU's, but I wouldn't think it would be enough to prevent the car from starting, would it? The ECU is a P2E.

Two things....you won't be able to use an obdII-a ecu in an obdII-b vehicle unless you completely swap out the under-dash harness and engine harness as well. Also, ideally you should swap out the under-dash harness to that of a 5-speed but if not you have to bypass the interlock system to think that the car is always in "park". Otherwise you won't be able to remove the key or start the car.

Damn, I figured that might be the case. How do I go about bypassing the interlock system? So, am I best off just leaving the auto ECU in the car and dealing with the check engine light? Thanks for the replies by the way.

If you leave the check engine light on you will run in limp mode.

What code are you getting with the auto ECU? I know it won't run correctly, but I don't think it would necessarily give you a CEL. Your best bet would be to find a 5-speed ECU of the same OBD generation as your car. As far as bypassing the interlock system, if you have a Haynes manual or something equivalent....look up the wiring diagram in the back. All you've got to do is jump it so that you have constant continuity through the "Park" lead.
