Posting this question for a friend that has a 4th gen stock Hatch.

It has 215,000 miles on the engine. The engine has a new stock Honda (steel) head-gasket. I used Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil (5W-30) after the new head-gasket was put in (at 210,000) and I noticed that the oil consumption went up considerably (1 quart per every 700 miles). Before with the old (and somewhat leaky) head-gasket and conventional oil the oil consumption was about 1 quart per 1,500 miles. Now I put in Mobil 1 synthetic 10W-30. Do you think I should use conventional or synthetic blend oil? Should I go up to 15W instead?

Try a conventional 10-30 oil instead of synthetic.

I was told by a friend who is an engineer for Nissan that when synthetic oil burns it is much worse for your car than conventional oil. For that reason I would switch back to conventional, plus the fact that your going to spend ten times the amount on synthetic vs conventional with no benefits.

High miles engine.... synthetic=bad

Synthetic has detergents that clean deposits that are left from convetional oil.. Those deposits were probably the only keeping the engine from leaking oil..

Sythetic oil also gets by worn valve seals and piston rings easier that a convetional oil would.. That would be were I would guess most of your oil is going.

I would go back to convetional oil on an older motor like that.. It is getting nothing special from a synthetic oil.

I have over 244k miles on my beater car.. always run just a regular oil in it.

maybe for older cars yeah, but oil is not just oil. i would never use penzoil for the fact that their conventional oil has a parafin like substance in it that craps up your engine components. i only use mobil 1 synthetic, but my motor only has like 35 grand on it so its still a baby lol. i figure if it comes standard in porsches and vettes, their must be a reason.
