are you talking about the machine that lifts the engine out of the bay? My friends and I always called them cherry pickers, but I am sure that's not the right name.

They are the same thing. The button looking piece that attaches to the rocker arm, and that the cam pushes on. Called the lifter or lost motion assemblie (LMA).

well in order to replace the lma's you generally need to remove the rocker shafts...so if you can take out the rockers/shafts out without taking the head off then no....but its a little easier to do with the head off...how do you know your lma's are bad. oh and by the way..they are called lma's if you want to order them from the dealer.

I replaced my Lost Motion Assemblies without pulling the head. There's enough room in a Civic's engine bay to pull the rocker arm shafts and rockers without removing the head. Honda's name for the part is Lost Motion Assembly, not lifter.

There is no lifter on a Honda motor. They do have a Lost motion assembly on the DOHC VTEC models. They are for the VTEC lobes to have resistance while turning while the low cam is turning the rocker arms.

they have them on sohc vtec motors too. its to take up the play from the loose rocker arm when its not in vtec or else it would just flop around in side the head.
