if im not mistaken.. the extra oil would have only cause him to overheat... but possibly some crank/block/head damage. did his temp ever rise?

hmm.. if hes getting spark then its not his timing belt. that would be my first guess. Have him check his radiator fluid. See if theres any oil mixed in with it. If he blew his head gasket, or worse case his head or block.. theres a 99% chance it will have mixed in with the coolant... but usually the car will still start.. but overheat very quickly. But im not certain about a cracked block.. ive never dealt with one of those before.. so im not certain about the symtoms of one. but still.. have him check his timing belt and fluids (oil too) If its mixed.. itll be a sluggish milky gray color.Youll notice almost right away.

Does it sound odd while cranking? It takes 3 things to make a car run. Fuel, spark, and air. He's getting air and spark, check for fuel. Also, it could be possible that maybe he jumped teeth on the timing belt, and the cam timing is way off.
