I thought this would be a fun little thing that we could do. The goal is to try to get as much horsepower out of a D16Y8 as possbile. I know that we all can't dyno and this is just for fun to see what everyone would use as parts.

So here are the rules:
1. The D16Y8(SOHC VTEC) HAS to be the stock engine in the car. No Mini-Me swaps.
2. You only have $4,000 or parts and labor for everything on the car(motor/suspension/brakes, etc) if you want to upgrade everything. If you can do something on your own you don't have to count labor but be real, don't say that you can PnP your own head or something.
3. If you work at a shop or have buddies that work at a shop you still have to list what retail of the parts would be no matter what you can get them at. We have to try to keep this fair.
4. Be creative with it don't just go I/H/E and N20. Try to work in some engine or head work or try to turbo or supercharge it if you can.
5. You can use used parts! If you can find a JRSC for 1500 on E-Bay or something you can add that do your parts list.

So lets see who can come up with the best engine. I know we can't know what power gain you can get just by doing it on the internet but lets have some fun.

Are we saying we already own the D16Y8 motor? Or do we have to find one and take that cost out of our $4000 budget?

So $4000 for engine mods or $4000 for everything? You wanted engine builds, not suspension and brakes too... so leave those out.

You already own the motor and it's 4000 for parts/labor for anything that you want to put on or do to the car....so if someone says also lowering the car you have to count that in the cost as well. Or you can spend it all on motor build...but the bottom-line is that you can't spend more then 4000 for the whole package.

Ok, that's a lot harder to compare people's results with... why don't you decide on a suspension setup for yourself first and then deduct that amount from the total... then give us another number to start with for just the engine?

why not leave the suspension how it is? we are trying to make power and suspension does nothing for that. the whole $4000 should be spent on the engine.

That's exactly what I'm saying. I assume that Erik here started this thread to see what HIS options are for building his car, not just arbitrarily $4000 to build something. Assuming he wants a suspension upgrade, he should take that amount out of the price for the "engine building challenge" budget. It is after all "engine building" not "car building" that he wants to hear about.
