OK well i was working on the car last night. (still didn't ge tto re pin the ECU). Anyway the car idles ok but when holding it around 2 - 3 K it's bogging or misfiring or something. So i have a new timing light but i've never used one. So is this how it works. Clip the wire on #1 plug wire? then the light flashes when the #1 plug fires? If it isn't flashing while the mark on the crank pully and timing over are linned up then i should move the dizzy forward / backwards right? Isn't this how it works? I'm hoping to have the car on the ground and test driving it tonight. Right now i have the dizzy moved all the way to the front just playing it by ear and feel it's running the best while it's there.

How a timing light works. Assuming you have an inductive one (one that is read off the spark plug wires), I have two timing lights, one is a digital readout, tells me how much RPM's and what degree the timing is on, and an advance light. Im assuming you have the first one. What you do is:

- Clip the inductive clamp on any spark plug wire, doesnt matter which one it is.
- Then shine the light at the crank pulley
- There should be a like a pointer on your timing cover
- Now once you can see the pointer look at the crank puller and I believe its 2 white marks and 1 red mark on the pulley
- You want the red mark to be lined up with the pointer on the timing cover, which i believe is like 12- 16 degrees. (if you have a helms manual it should tell you)
-To achive timing you have to play with your dizzy, move it back and forth to either retard or advance the timing

Hope this helps mike.

this is the timing light i have. Just got it the other day.

Use to check initial ignition timing and advance on vehicles with computer-controlled, electronic or point ignitions. For use on domestic and imported vehicles
It has a advencment knob on the back that goes from 0 to 60
So i know i need to get the pointer lined up with the mark but how does the light help in anyway. Does the light tell you when the plug is firing? I don't know i have my Helms on disc here in the office so i'll look it up and post what they have, Thanks for the info BOBBIE.

ok that is an advance light, what you wanna do is, set the knob to zero cause that is gonna be your base timing. Any more movement of the knob will advance your timing. So say base timing is 16 degrees, move the knob to 5 and you will have 21 degrees of timing.

well then sounds like your timing might be off alot and you might have to take the timing belt off and reset your timing and make sure its TDC on the cams and crank.

i fucking reset the crank to TDC on the compresion stroke and teh cams like 6 times teh other day. I'm thinking it's because my IACV isn't pinned right yet. The first thing i'm doing tonight is pinning that ECU and jumping the plug. And letting the car warm up and try the light and see what happends. It wouldn't matter that i'm running an open header right now right?

as long as your running a header no it shouldnt matter. Yeah sounds like a electrical problem to me, if everything is mechanically in spec and right, then check your wiring now.
