A buddy and I did a head swap on his 92 hatch which has a D15 motor. We used an old timing belt. well one day while merging onto the highway, it shredded on him. I think it broke because the lower timing belt cover is not the right one, it has been modified by someone and doesn't look the best of shape, what my question is, would it hurt to leave that cover off? i know you can leave the upper cover off and it doesn't hurt anything, why would it hurt to have the lower off as long as you have the washer on that keeps the belt aligned right? Let me know all of your thoughts, the more the better. we are going to get this hoe running if its the last thing we do.

probablly wouldn't hurt under normal circumstances.. it's a cover, its yoru choice to keep it on.. can only be worse not having it on... but mike has run with out a lower trans/fly wheel cover for ever and he's cool...

yeah DO NOT LEAVE THAT COVER OFF> if you get dirt in there your fucked the oil pump is right there and the way the oil gear and the crank gear are really close and it only takes alittle dirt to start causing problems

Alright well i guess we'll have to search for the right cover, i know this one is the wrong one. looks like someone modified it with a grinding wheel. i know the last 4 owners of this car and they were all dumb so who knows what it's been through, i do know it's been through 3 different motors since i have known the car.

Also when he broke the belt could it have messed anything up, i heard on overhead cam motors the valves will sometimes bottom out on the pistions and jack some stuff up. is this true?

how high were teh RPMS when it happend? He could have bent a valve. Just make sure when you put the new belt on that you have the crank set at TDC on the compresion storke and set the cams at TDC also. Spine the crank with a 19MM rachet 6 full rotations and you will know if anything is bent. If it get hard to turn (make sure you don't the plug in) stop because your hitting a valve. if you do hit a valve take the head off.

you could leave the cover off, but think if something got in there and shredded another belt while you were at 6 or 7 G's then you would be screwed. The cover is there for saftey reasons and to keep dirt and grime out. My suggestion is to put it back on.
