Shortly after sprinting down US24 on a run today while losing to a BMW 740iL... I lightly applied my brakes to slow down from God only knows how fast I was going and the next thing I know my brake grinding just...

stopped.

Yes, just completely stopped grinding. The weird thing is I went and rented my caliper tool today, got some grease and found out my dad has an impact wrench with an aircompressor I can use.

I'm still going to replace my pads and rotors anyway tomorrow, but I want to know what in the hell happened that it would stop grinding from a high speed light brake application after it's been doing it for the past month. I used to brake from any speed and it'd do it anyway.

Specifically what it was doing:

I pop off the ebrake when i first get in the car, start moving and it'd make a grinding sound.

Once the brakes warmed up from a few uses it would grind while braking, and then grind for a little bit after I let off the brakes, then it would retract the pads.

I don't get how it's suddenly not doing that anymore (not that I'm complaining, because it was annoying).

Any input?

mechanical failures and noises can come and go, but when it comes to your brakes its important you KNOW whats up.

The best advice i can give you is to take it to a trusty mechanic for a look, Its not safe to run your car hard, let alone drive it at all with braking issues. Just my 02.

the rotors and pads are getting changed tomorrow. I have the tool rented and the calipers are getting greased and rebored.

I still have full braking power, and since they're the rears I don't think I'd have much to worry about anyway.

Just trying to figure out how they could suddenly just pop back into place like that.

We'll see tomorrow, I'll be sure to take pictures.

like doughboy said, sometimes it just stops doing it, whatever was making them grind maybe came loose or something finally. It could be a million things, but brakes are the FIRST most important thing on a car, so i would get them fixed asap.

Wow... 5 months later. We finally got them changed. The rear inner pads were worn down to the block themselves. I had no pads on them at all. The warning pins were snapped off. The rotors were grooved to shit. All the grinding came back, and i could only get to it this weekend. I had a few friends help, well basically one of htem did most of the work. Anyway, pads and rotors are changed and broken in.

What was left of the inside pad.

old vs new pad

whats left of the old rotor

installed new rotor

finished product

This side the screws came out with force and didn't sheer, the other side needed drilled out. So they are no longer holding the rotor in place. Oh well.

edit: they're basically stock replacements with autozone pads.
