i know what it is and for the most part why it happens but im not sure what it sounds like nor how to prevent or get rid of it. heres the story. i know hondas all have that distinctive sound to them and yes i may be making something out of nothing but i was before changin my oil last week i notice that the car seemed to be making this tapping sound. so i revved the motor a lil from under the hood to get a better feel for what the sound was. to me it sounds like a tapping or clicking. it goes away above like 3k and u can here it more when the rpms are going down, aka when u let off the gas, i dont know what this is or if it is normal. i cant remember what my other honda motors sounded like so i just wanna make sure its nothin out of the ordinary.

so my questions are
1)what does valve tap sound like?
2)does it happen in only one cylinder, and only on one valve or does it affect all of them.
3)how do i prevent it?
4)and four what do i do if i have it?

thanks in advance for all the answers.

Listen to see if the sound is coming from the distributor. My car did the same thing, and i replaced the rotor in the distributor and it stopped. The noise was distinctly coming from the distributor on my car.

It doesn't affect anything but as injectors get older the pulse noise gets louder. tap, tap , tap, tap, tap , Distro rotor click click click.

On a real not those. Get a stethoscope (sp) (doctors listening thing) And move it around to pin point the sound your hearing.

im with mike on this one, go to autozone pick up a stethescope, and listen to where the sound is coming from, put the tip of it on the valve cover if the noise is from inside there your valves need adjusting, if its comign from the dizzy, etc, etc
