I have a 98 Honda civic DX; I just put in a brand new exedy clutch kit.

NOTE: this is the first time I have run this car since I bought it, and it could be other parts of the tranny or clutch that is causing this problem? so don?t think it?s limited to juts the new clutch.

When I up shift in gears, its smooth. When I seem to downshift to gears 2nd and 1st, it makes this really bad scraping noise.. It?s like the sound when u don?t have any tried left on your break pads and they are scraping on your rotors.

I did not replace my flywheel, b/c the bolts where very hard to get off, and I didn?t want to risk breaking them. I cleaned it good however. Any imput would be awesome!

it could be your syncro's goin out. whoever had the car before hand miss-shifted alot. if you are running it into higher rpms and then shifting try keepin your rpms around 3k and it might cut that out abit. if it is that than the best thing you need to do is get another tranny instead of replacing your syncro's. replacing them is harder and more expensive than just replacing the tranny.

Its a used tranny from a 95 civic, I bought it 2 weeks ago, the guy said it shifted fine, just made a "humming" noise, that could possible be fixed with a thicker oil, he said it shifted just fine and stuff.. so i bought it... so you think its the tranny?

sounds like a main bearing in the tranny, you might as well replace it

A guy that had the same problem told me to use "Penzoil synchromesh", he said let it break in for 500miles, which is fine, b/c i gotta break in my clutch anyway... but he said this fixed his problem. So I will keep you guys updated.

I think you got screwed- he most likely sold you a transmission with bad synchronizers. You shouldn't need to use GM synchromesh gear oil at all to have a smooth Honda transmission- the requirement to use it should be enough to tell you that your synchronizers are bad. "Breaking it in" for 500 miles is bullshit. If the synchromesh fluid works for you and you don't have the means to diagnose the real problem of the transmission, then good- but I would still save up another $250 and try to get a known good transmission... either that or try to get your money back from the guy who sold it to you.
