got a quickie for ya ... how is it a 91 CRX HF has 62hp and gets like 47-50 mpg and a 1994 Civic VX hatch gets like 92hp with about the same mpg? they have the same engine if i am correct. is it all in their ecu settings? if so could you swap a vx ecu for a HF's and get the extra horses? i am totally confused!

You can't swap them, they are different obd versions...and it has more to it than just the ecu.

from memory, vtec-e basically turns a 16 valve motor into an 8 (or 12? it might be on the intake side only) valve up until 2500-ish rpms. the valves still open slightly so fuel doesn't puddle on them. after 2500-ish, the intake valves have different lift specs, which creates a cyclonic action in the cylinder. so the simple analogy is that it's an 88-91 HF motor before vtec, and (almost) a d15b7 after vtec. the HF motor is full-time 8 valve.
