Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't know much about these parts. I took out my engine earlier and notice that my boots on the rack and pinion(I think thats what it is, the things behind the axles)were torn. My car makes funny noises when I hit bumps, kind of sounds like bad axles but its not the axles. I'm putting in the motor tommorrow afternoon and would like as much help about this as I can. Can I just replace the boots or do I need to get a whole new thing and how hard is it to change it? Is it safe driving it with the boots torn a little? Thanks for all of your informations.

yeah, those are just dust boots, not like the axles boots which are packed with grease and must remain air tight. you'll be fine, and like simplegreen said, that's probably not what's making the noise.

Check your bushings and balljoints.
