I have two transmissions; one from a D16Y8 and I believe the other one is from a 96 LX D16Y7. My car currently has the D16Y8 motor with the D16Y7 transmission bolted up to it. This past month, a bolt holding the clutch to the flywheel backed itself out and began chewing up the interior of the bellhousing of the D16Y7 trans. I'm not sure if its because of this bolt, but the trans began leaking a short time ago.

My D16Y8 trans has a bad 2nd gear synchro and always pops out of gear, but the bellhousing isn't chewed up and never leaked oil.

I was wondering if it was possible to switch out all the gears from the Y7 trans and swap them into the Y8 trans housing? Would everything fit correctly? I'd hate to remove the trans, open it up and then find it won't work.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure that you can... I've never done it before, but all the D series transmissions are interchangeable (from engine to engine), so I'd imagine that the internals would all be the same fitment too. It just makes more sense from an engineering and manufacturing point of view too- more common parts = large economies of scale.

You might try shooting an email off to the guys at Effin Motorworks. They do quite a few D series transmission rebuilds, and are pretty knowledgeable about how everything goes together. They specialize in combining ZC gear ratios with other transmission to get the fastest possible setup.

Why not just replace the 2nd gear and use the y8 tranny so you can have the y8 gearing as i am sure it is different than the y7's.

The only thing that is different or should be different are the gear ratios. No reason why nothing else shouldn't match up.

Y8 and Y7 gearing are different, but replacing the internals from case to case would take 5 minutes and cost me nothing. I don't have a press big enough to do transmission work.

I may fix the synchro later on, but for right now I'm just going to swap internals to hopefully fix the problem.
