Hey, I was looking into this because I read in "honda tuning" of a few people that had wrote in after hydrolocking their motor with a CAI. But I also understand that the filter must be 100% submerged for this to happen. How the hell can you get the water line ABOVE this filter? I live in Homocide, Rhode Island, and we get a decent amount of snow and not to much rain in the summers. But next summer I leave the hood and move to Florida, and I know they get a lot of rain.
So what are your opinions/experiences with this?

I live in Houston, and believe me we get copious amounts of rain over here and I have decided to go with a SRI just because I cant take the risk of damaging my car(I'll have to figure out a way to get fresh air in there...??????)
So it is possible to get the water line above the filter especially since a CAI filter goes behid your front bumper so I think that if you are going to gt a CAI then a bypass filter is a must! but thats just me |

Homocide, RI??? neat....well to answer your question, IMO they are worthless, unless you take off your splash guards. the filter has to be completely submerged in order for the thing to work in the first place, and if youre in deep enough water to get up and over the splash shield, and submerge your filter, id say youre probably shit out of luck anyway. so as long as you keep your splash shield, i cant really see any reason to have one.

I live in New Orleans and it rains just about every other Day. I have an AEM Cold Air Intake and I have had some funny experiences with it. Well Right when I got the Intake My water pump broke so I had to bring my car to the shop to get that replaced, and While they were at it I told them to do the timing belt also since you have to remove it to get to the water pump anyway. Well anyway. The shop forgot to put my splash gaurds back on. So I had to wait for them to buy me a new one. Well The next day I was at work and When I got off The street that the parking lot exited into was flooded with about 1.5 feet of water. I did not have my splash gaurd so I was worried about driving through the water, even though I have the Water Bypass Valve on it. Well the rain did not look like it was going to stop so I reved real high and flew towards the water and right before I hit the "angry sea" I turned off my ignition and coasted through it. Well I guess the bypass valve worked because I am still driving my car today. No prob. And I recieved my splash gaurd shortly after. I have driven through some really bad rain also. So in my opinion it works awesome.

umm.. well if you "cut of the ignition" the cars not going to run.. Without it running there is no vacume in the intake..
So the bypass valve didn't work... because you didn't give it a chance to......

They do NOT work!!!
How's that for short and to the point! If you need more proof, keep checking this post and you'll see that many more people will agree. Later. Sam - |

As far as those over priced peices of foam and rubber will stop your motor from ingesting water- NO! I only speak out of personal experience, I had one on my AEM CAI, drove through a fairly deep puddle and bent 8 valves and 2 rods. No the filter wasnt submerged but I have no splashguards thanks to 17's and 1.5" drop. Dont waste your money, if enough water goes through your intake to damage your motor, a foam sponge in the intake will only prolong the painfu and costly death
of your motor.
