Default Broken Belt... newbie... help please

hi,

I know next to nothing about car engines, as you'll soon see.
A friend of mine ran over a deer... yes, over it, with my 2000 civic. it smashed the front plastic grill and pushed the air conditioning rad back (if that's what you call it).
There was a noise and it turned out to be the large pulley (attached to the air conditioning motor maybe??) was offset and wobbling. It was drivable but noisy.
Today I saw smoke coming from under the hood while driving, pulled over and looks like it was just the belt that was wearing and burning. Was close to home so took the chance as I had no cell on me. When I got home I checked and the belt had broken.
Anyway, questions are...

Is this just a belt for air conditioning or does it serve another purpose? Am I in danger of overheating for any reason?
Is it drivable without that belt?

thanks in advance!

Oh... the pulley is the lowest on the drivers side of the car near the front. So front right side of the engine.

You need to fix that belt. Were is the belt located? Did you feel something wrong while driving or just the smoke?
