Here's the story...

I acquired a B20Z motor on the suggestion of the mechanic I'm using. I was going to just go with a ZC and call it done, but with his pushing I went ahead with this... adding about $700 to what I wanted to spend.

During the past few weeks, he's almost talked me into putting an ITR head on it and go all out, but I've already given him $1400 for all labor and an S1 tranny out of a 1990 Teg LS. To do the ITR, he says it'd be another 12-1300 and that would include labor as well, along with a timing belt and water pump that I would have to cover if I don't do the VTEC head.

I still need to have A/C on it, and apparently go to OBD-1, which I don't know all of those costs... but he told me that I'd need a wiring adaptor and proper ECU, and a A/C compressor that's compatible with a Hasport mount kit yet to be had. New lines would be needed as well I guess.

Basically, all these costs are beginning to add up (I have $2400 in it now), and I'm thinking about just stopping with the base B20Z install, no Vtec... since I don't think I want to dump over $3500 into a car that's not worth that anymore, plus I think I have to pay for still more parts... clutch, flywheel, axles/IM shaft, etc. Going with VTEC would require my buying the right ECU, adaptor harness, and still more shit that I thought would be in with the initial 1400.

I haven't committed to the VTEC thing yet, and I'm almost convinced I want to stop at this point... hell, it's too bad I just can't go back to the ZC and have a better chance of having LSD.

I need some advice, pro/con list, etc... I can't justify the expense.

Wiz, I'm at a similar standpoint right now. I'm not sure what do dump into my new project car . . . in my case it's b16 vs. f22
Either way, we're both looking at vtec vs. non vtec and worse yet, drop ins vs. kits, fabbing, etc.
I say, let this post drag on for a while and see what everyone else really recomends you to do. They are great help!
Since I planned on doing either a 5th gen hb, 4th gen hb / CRX everyone pretty much steered me AWAY from the f22 for the simple reason that I'd need to get to in depth as far as the install is concerned.
I wanted more of a streaight drop, plug n' play setup that will last for the long haul.
Make sure that you don't build up one of those cars that are fast as f. but need constant baby sitting and dialing in . . . were's the fun in that.
Don't give yourself anymore of a head aich than you really need.
I would have said zc all the way.
I've wanted to do the b20 vtec thing myself but I've got noone to help me and not enough $ to fix things if I screw up building it, haha
It's in your hands bro!

See what a few more people think and we'll continue this thought from there.

Lates.

Skip out on the vtec, and buy a turbo, a b20 played around with a bit with that turbo can get into 12's not super easy, but easier then a zc I would guess, the torque numbers are pretty nice but anyway vtec is nice, but boost makes up for the loss unless you want to go n/a then..vtec is the way to go anyway later.

Only interested in N/A... and I could give a rat's ass about 1/4 times. I only want to drive the car, have it reliable, good mileage, and have good passing power. No street racing or similar punk shit ... I'm more mature than that.

All I had original intent to do was give the car a decent bump in power just so I had something that felt more like my M3, but could go in snow and shit weather.

If your only interested in N/A by all means go vtec, reliable depends on how you treat it..and if it's built right. The b20 is 'decent' on it's own, but much much more enjoyable to drive with the vtec head.

hahah the 4 most recent hybrid posts are all about B20.

anyways, I would suggest dropping in the extra cash right now rather than later. B20Z is a very nice engine and a great daily driver by all means, but I'm thinking it's 15s, possibly 14s max? (I've never been on the track so I wouldn't know) Most people usually either turbo or swap heads with b20. A B16 head will put you around 200 give or take a few hp. If you ever get another civic or teg in the future you could just drop the whole block in there.

Well, I suppose I'm going to talk with my installer and find out what's needed. Perhaps once I have a list I can put it on here and maybe others will have what I'm looking for at a "holy jeez, I need help" price.

Then you really should have done this research BEFORE you let your mechanic talk you out of something you wanted for something you didn't want. No offense really, but that doesn't sound very mature.

As for what you're saying you're looking for, keep the car straight B20, don't bother with VTEC or turbo. This motor will give you the power increase you're looking for for "mature driving".

If "mature driving" is like 140'ish hp...I'm glad I'm not mature.
