I was just talking to a friend of mine who is actually more into VW's than anything but a true "tuner" none the less.

We were talking "Honda" when he brought up something interesting . . .

b18 head on a b16 block

What exactly would you have to do?
What are the gains from doing this?
and more importantly . . .
Is there an actual nickname for this?

I told him I'd check into it for him, get some facts about it, and fill him in on it.

Any and all info would be appreciated on this one.

I'm sure that this should stir up some other intrest.

Thanks.

Take off b16 head and install b18c head

Slightly smaller combustion chamber, so very slight increase in compression

b16 with a b18 head

Really both heads are really similar as far as flow and everything. A lot of people say that the b16 flows better, but it is the manifold not the head that hinders flow on the b18. So all and all there is no point to doing this and that is why it isn't done much unless if someone has a b16, needs a new head, and finds a gsr head for less than a b16 head.

Andy is correct. It will bolt right up without any problems. He would also need the GSR intake manifold and ECU, unless he went with a single runner intake manifold like a Skunk2. Then he could use his stock ECU.

so the two heads are pretty much the same? is anyone one better than the other for LS/VTEC or CRVTEC?

One isn't really better than the other. I've seen the flowbench charts for both heads and they are almost identical. Like Andy said, the GSR head has a smaller combustion chamber, which will yield a slightly higher compression ratio. The only problem with some B16 heads is that they are very old, from first gen B16's, and need to be rebuilt.
