Why upgrade pistons and not rods? That's a half assed way to build a motor. Besides, you're gonna have to at least upgrade the stock rod bolts for it to hold 8k reliably, on a daily basis.

Yup. Upgrade both at the same time. If you can't afford to upgrade the rods while you upgrade the pistons, you shouldn't bother with either one. Just spend the money on engine management. Any extra power that you're going to require the forged pistons to hold is going to bend your stock rods.

Given that you can get decent quality forged B series rods for $250 new, I think it's worth your time to buy a set while you're inside the engine playing around. By the way, read my PM back to you. There's a ton of good information in it.

yea...i see what you all mean. I found a good deal off a H-T vendor for Wiseco pistons and rings for 455.00 shipped. Couldnt find any online vendors that sell the Probe Ultralite rods though.

Now with upgraded rods and pistons, is the crank ok? Would one need to get it balanced/blueprinted after install or is it not really needed since the specs are pretty much almost the same...Also, i hear that the B20 sleeves are weak(er) than most B-series engines... If i got a motor like that would i need to get it resleeved? or is it fine since theres no boost/nitrous involved.

CP!!!!!!!!! i just order a set for my LS $495 shipped, now i just need some rods. Check out www.Evans-tuning.com, Jeff is a cool guy and knows his shit. He's on the east coast so it might be a better option for you to have him do the work for you.

Use ctr pistons with a gsr head, that will give you the highest compression ratio with oem pistons.
cant use anything other than B20 pistons in a B20 the bore is too big.[/b]
lol oops your right i was thinking ls/vtec. sorry. regardless use the gsr head...it yields the most compression.

the b20 bores are siamesed and thin. but being that your not gunna go high compression or turbo i dont think it will be that big of a deal.

well i'm thinking of raising it from the oem 9.3 or whatever to the claimed 13.0:1 with the new pistons and rods.

you better put a block gaurd in there or get stonger sleeves, The walls are thin on the b20, i'm not sure it they will hold 13:1

ImportBuilders' "IB Spec" I beam rods are Probe Ultralites.

The stock crank is fine. Get it all "10k rpm" balanced and you'll be fine.

There's no reason to polish the crank journals unless there's scarring from abuse.

You'll be fine. Stock compression was either 8.8:1 or 9.6:1, depending on model and make of the B20.

They'll hold. The B20 sleeves aren't made of glass like everyone thinks... everyone who's never even played with a B20 it seems.

The B20 sleeves cleaned up will definitely hold 13.0:1 compression. Just make sure you tune well enough not to detonate. Detonation is what kills engines.

Well lets say its a B20B and has around 55k on it... how does one avoid detonation?? and i believe 13.0:1 is one of the extremes, i'm pretty sure that it wouldnt get that high, would a CR of 10-11.5:1 make some decent numbers with the pistons, rods, GSR head, ITR cams on a GSR tranny?
