obd2s suck! my brother had his s2s2 cams installed in his 00Si. now his ecu is acting up and wants to revert to stock setting making the car run lean. his vafc isn't helping either. one tuner recommends hondata s200 and another a conversion from obd2 to obd1. now which is better?
coz i've been thinking if i get my swap and run into the same thing...u know.tanx in advance. ![]() |

Hondada uses OBD1 ecu's so you have to convert from OBD2b to OBD1 either way.

Hondata only works for OBD1 and the newer K20 OBD2 ECUs. You can't get a Hondata system for a 96-00 Civic.
If you convert to OBD1, you most likely won't have a chance of passing emissions in California. If the problem is just tuning, you could try to wire in a VAFC2 and add some fuel... but then again, you would probably throw a flag on the inspector's system when it detected that you had a piggyback system installed. Take the cams out, go get smogged, put them back in. ![]() |

ODB2 in the 96-00 honda cars are not reprogrammable so thats why he is having trouble with his VAFC and the car wanting to go back to lean. He needs to get a ODB1 ECU, get the jumper harness, get the ECU socketed for hondata, get the hondata, tune it and run!

Both of those replace your ecu and will have the obd2 plugs. I am not sure on the passing CARB inspection. I believe a VAFC or something similar is the only way to keep your origional ecu. You might want to have another shop take a look at things to make sure something isn't overlooked just because honestly you shouldn't have problems with just the vafc and the stock ecu.

I think that the AEM would be CRAB legal they are normally pretty good about marketing products that are 100% CRAB legal. But thats going to set you back 1200 bucks or so...unless you can get the low-low hook up from someone.

CRAB is about right... it's CARB Erik!
California Air Resource Board :P The standalone ECUs most likely will NOT be CARB legal. Why would a company want to go through the rigorous CARB certification process on a product that very few people will use on the street in California? CARB certification is much more common for widely sold things like intakes, headers and exhausts. California smog refs will fail you for VAFCs and Hondata- they'll definitely fail you for a true standalone system too. You've not only tampered with the factory emissions control hardware- you've completely removed it. |
