im going to put a turbo kit on my hatch with a b16 a2 in it. I was just wondering how much boost the stock rod will hold or even a hp rating . I m going to put pistons and a block guard and arp bolts and rods if the stock rods are not strong . My plans are to just run 8psi on the street and 12-15psi at the track after the rebuild .If any one has some info please help

If you get forged pistons, you must use aftermarket rods. I wouldn't push past 10psi at the track, assuming you have good tuning.

b16's have factory 10.2:1 or 10.4:1 compression (i think if the block serial number starts with 5 instead of 1 then its a 10.4, jdm only. this might be crap but thats what ive been lead to believe) regardless, its too high to go over 4-5 psi on 93 octane. when you pull your motor apart to put turbo pistons, i would recommend the insurance of a quality aftermarket rod but if you cant afford it, then you can buy arp rod bolts for your stock rods and beam them. beaming a rod is when you polish the length of the rod with an abrasive on a rotary tool of your choice. what happens is the small pits and craters on the surface of the rod become stress riser.. like little peaks that get very hot and concentrate heat and stress in that area, leading to a crack which leads to connecting rod failure and that spells trouble for the whole motor. beaming a rod, polishing it i guess you could say, can increase fatigue life up to 200%
also another thing to consider is used civic type r rods (b16b.) these have a higher chromium content, same as the usdm gsr and type r rods, giving them more strength. check ebay to see if anyone is selling a set of used ctr rods. not many people know this so the price is fairly affordable, i would say theyre worth a hundred for a set. too bad the usdm b16 rods were lesser. fortunately the rod to stroke ratio is high, meaning that its a short stroke, short rod engine and the rod does not slant very far in the bore at 90 and 270 degrees, unlike the LS motor, b20, etc. b16s are pretty sturdy up to 8000 rpms but if youre in there to do the pistons might as well cover the rods right? hope this helps |

The rod's in a B-16 are fairly strong, much stronger than the D series rods. But according to many sources the rods in any honda motor are the weakest link in the chain. Most claim that B series rods can handle up to 150% of the stock hp/tq rating. So a b16 should be safe with 240hp or so. Hope this helps.

a B16 would easily handle 7-8 pounds daily driven and 10 at the track stock. Anything over 10 I would advise you to work on the internals.
