Question

Ugh, the mechanic says I need a new catalytic converter for my 98 Civic LX because the manifold is cracked, and it will be $670. Does that sound right? I'm such a loser - I've never taken my car to be fixed all by myself, because my dad always insisted in taking care of that stuff. I want to do this all by myself now without getting advice from my dad - but I also don't want the mechanics to be all about "Don't you worry, little lady, we'll take care of it for you" and then charge me too much. Hmm.

Also, where can I get paint to repair scratches?

yeah that mechanic is trying to rip you a new one. Im not sure about LX's if you have the catalytic converter in the exhaust manifold or not, but most likely not. Just go to a junk yard, get a manifold, im sure they will have plenty (not like hondas are rare) and put the new manifold on and put your cat back on. If your cat is clogged (if you have emmissions where you live, i wouldnt reccomend doing this) gut it with a pipe and make sure you collect everything inside of it and throw it away. But 700 dollars for a new manifold and catalytic coverter is a right price, but he is trying to rip you off.

if that is the non-vtec single cam the manifold is the catalytic and $670 does not sound to much if you ask me. On a car that is going on seven years old that seems about fair. If I were you I would get all the information on your car run over to nearest Honda dealership and get a price on one for yourself to see if they are yanking your chain.
