Ok, I'm new here...not stupid tho.

Ok, so, I was driving my del slow at around 85 mph in fifth gear. All of a sudden, it didn't pop out of gear, but it might as well have. It just started revving, so I took it out of gear and put it back in to make sure it didn't pop, and it still did the same thing. So now, while scratching my head , I put it in fourth and slow down a bit, thinking maybe it would be ok and I could put some lucas in it when I got home (I'm about a half and hour away from my house.) So, just my luck, it does it in fourth gear about 10 seconds later. Now I'm pissed. So I pull over, try to put it through all the gears, and it will only go in second and reverse. Of course, being a girl, I start flipping out and crying. I mess with it some more, and I can get it in first, second, and reverse fine, and they all work. Third, fourth, and fifth don't work at all, I can't even get it in the gears. When I let the clutch out, it makes kind of a loud noise, not a griding noise, but one that doesn't sound too good. Any ideas???

Thanks.

Could be some bad synchros OR a misaligned clutch.

Is that easy to fix?? I had a few people tell me that it could be a broken pin that holds the gears together and now they're out of alignment. This wasn't a gradual thing, it just happened. Even when the car is off, I can't get it in those gears...how could that be the clutch? I don't know.

Shift linkage... it's right under the car next to your exhaust pipe (under the shifter, duh). Something probably came loose at the bottom of your shifter. Make sure everything's hooked up correctly. If it still happens after you get it all tightened up, then I would start thinking about the inside of the transmission.

A few tips- if there's an aftermarket shifter in there, it's likely something came loose from an improper installation. You might also want to replace the shifter bushings with polyurethane units from Energy Suspension. They really clean up the shifter feel.

I agree. I had some problems with my shift linkage when I put my motor back in. The linkage pin wouldn't come out and it mushroomed, so I tried to drill it out...then finally bought an air hammer and blasted it out. Needless to say the hole in the linkage was a little oblong, and a little bigger than the hole on the shaft going to the tranny. I put a bolt in that was a little too small, and there was some slop in the linkage...it wouldn't go into every gear and was sloppy. I put in a bigger bolt to tighten it up, and it works great now. So yea, check the linkage/shifter.

I checked the linkage as soon as it happened. It's not that. I think the tranny needs to come apart or be replaced. Another reason I don't think it's the linkage is that it makes a really loud noise when it's idleing. It goes away as soon as I push the clutch in. I'm hoping it's the clutch, that's cheaper and easier to fix, but I have a very bad feeling that it's something more complicated and expensive.

The same the happened to me in my very first honda. I was driving on the highway and the my shifter popped out of 5th the 4th and 2nd. All I had for gears was 1st and 3rd and reverse. The gears in the tranny grinded down to where they were almost smooth. I shelled out about 800 for a new clutch and a rebuilt tranny. If there are high miles and you have done a lot of burn outs then you may have the same problem I had.
