i have a limited knowledge about codes but if you remove the battery cables from the battery connections it can reset your ecu and possibly shut the check engine light off. give it a try and drive it for a lil bit. if the light goes off and stays off most likely u never had a problem to begin with and it the light comes back on get it checked out by a proper mechanic with good diagnostic skills cuz if he can only read the codes and not diagnose the problem ur gonna wind up paying much more for parts and labor.

depending on what civic you have year/model, there are a dew ways to turn off the light. on the 2000/2004 civic you push the distance reset button hold it in and turn your car on. after 3 seconds the light should go off.
i called a honda dealer and they wouldn't tell me. but i figured it out. and disconnecting the battery wont turn the light off. even worse now your cd player wont work till u put the code in. we never knew we had a code untill i called honda and they gave it to me.

In the engine bay fuse compartment there is a fuse that you have to pull to reset the ECU on 6th gens, might be true for other hondas/civics.

Took the words right off my finger tips. Although I wouldn't have used usually, The check engine light is always on for a reason, just clearing it only gets rid of an annoying little light, not the reason it's on.

teamnvysionhb:

Code 7: ECT sensor (Engine Coolant Temp): If your car is not over heating there is a problem in wiring from ECU to sensor, sensor is unplugged, or the sensor is bad
Code 9: TDC Sensor (Top Dead Center):You motor is not coming to TDC properly (probably not the case) Wiring, sensor bad or unplugged
Code 17: VSS Sensor (Vehicle Speed Sensor): Defective circuit, bad or unplugged sensor.
