I know this may be a dumb question, but I have a 98 civic ex and I am looking to buy a motor. I know my car is obd2. So my question is if I buy a obd1 motor, would I be able to convert it to obd2. Or, would I have any problems swapping obd1 into my car. Would I be able to use the harness of the obd1 motor or would I need a different harness and would I use the obd1 ecu? Thanks for any help you all may be able to give me.

Why again do you not want to get a OBD1 ecu? I think that would be so much easier.
here is a link were you can buy a OBD2 to OBD1 harness. http://www.jdmshit.com/ecu/index.html (at the bottom under Additional Hardware)

I am not understanding. So if I bought a obd1 motor, I would install the obd1 ecu right? And if I did that I wouldn't need to obd2 to obd1 harness; correct? Would I also have to convert to a header w/one O2 sensor?

Why not just buy an OBD2 motor and not have to worry about it? First of all, an OBD2 motor is newer and most likely in better condition. Second, you won't have the hassel of mix-n-matching parts to get it to work...you could just buy the complete OBD2 swap and go. Third, you can always get an OBD2-OBD1 conversion harness, and run an OBD1 ECU, without the hassel you're talking about.

I basicly wanted to open it up for what I can and cant get. I know the obd1 motors are a little less expensive and I heard they were easier to tune. The mileage and wear doesnt really matter, because I plan on taking it to a machine shop and rebuilding the block. No big deal.

I don't think OBD1 motors are going to be much less expensive. I would get an OBD2 motor and not have the hassle, and get an OBD2-OBD1 harness and OBD1 ECU...then it's just as tunable as an OBD1.

If that is the reason, i would still do a OBD2 motor and then get a harness so you can use a OBD1 ECU, or just get hondata. Im in the process of doing that myself.
