do not put 5 quarts ina single cam motor The most it would hold would be 4.2 and thats after a total engine overhaul....they only hold 4...actually to be exact its 3.5 for an oil change but that doesnt matter. The amount of oil has only partly to do with vtec...it is oil pressure that engages vtec, not oil quantity(you would have to drop dramatically low for vtec to not engage, and if you get that low, the last thing on your mind should be oh crap...my vtec isnt working). the only blocks that carry 5 quarts stock are the b series. in fact, i think even the LS motors only came with a 4 quart pan.
Start running a thicker oil..id say 20-50, and i would use proline with a proline filter. its what we use over here in all our motors. BTW By putting in too much oil...you will start burning more oil. not to mention it throws off a lof different things...your talking about a quart over full if you put in 5, thats damn near enough to touch the crank. not to mention its hard on seals and everything else. |

striped oil pan bolt, bad gasket? my oil leaked out of my 98 from the oil pan bolt. it was striped, i just went to honda and got a new one for like three bucks. it could be a bad gasket to. but i agree with doughboy, go with what he said.

I used to put 5 quarts in my D16y7 non Vtec everytime. It worked great. I've used 5 quarts for all my 4 cyl. cars.

Well since everyone replaces the filter with an oil change, it would be 4 quarts for a d-series and most b-series motors besides the b18c (which holds 4.2 quarts). If you drive the car regularly and put quite a few hours on it, it is not way abnormal for it to burn some oil and not cause a noticable smoke from the exhaust.

wow...the shop manual say...3.5 i wouldnt take my car to anyplace that over fills a motor...regardless of whether they are named majestic honda or not. Just as a general practice, and we do it in every motor we build...and weve built some decent power d series..and guess what..we dont need 5 quarts of oil(which is 1.5 quarts OVER what honda recommends) and they all run...well...like they just came off the show room...weird...i dunno, and id dare anyone to put 6 quarts into their honda motor...id love to see that. besides the fact..how can you see oil overflow?? theres no open spot for it to over flow from...it will just eventually fill the crankcase, and cause drag on the crank...Just a thought...i dunno...i forgot i dont know what im doing.
oh and BTW just because they say it INCLUDES up to 5 quarts, does NOT mean they put that much in... |

You say that 5 is 1.5 over what honda recommends, well I've always used 5 because when I bought my first honda, that's what honda recommended. So I'll have my honda tech arm wrestle your honda tech and we can go racing. But other than that, again... you use 3.5 quarts and it works for you, BUT you state "DO NOT" use 5... so my question again is Why? |
