Shifter Don't Move Smoothly Between Gears

Hi all! I have a civic DX 2001 standard. Since about 1 month when I want to change gear using the shifter it's not moving smoothly/right. For example, if I'm on 2nd gear and need to go to 3rd, I just can't push the shifter to the center and then continue to the 3rd slot. What happens is that when the shifter reaches the neutral position it just can't be push to the 3rd slow. It feels like 2 peaces of rubber force against each other and it also makes this squeaky noise of wet rubber pieces sliding again each other. That said, after I move to the neutral position from the 2nd gear, if I try to go to 3rd, hit the mysterious resistance, then let the shifter come back to neutral and try the 3rd speed again it will work fine (with the squeaky noise when moving to the 3rd gear). Once I shifted the car seems to react normally and I haven't notice any acceleration issue. Since the last month the car has been exposed to intense cold as well as snow and slush on the road.
As you can see I know nothing about transmission and want to know if anybody knows what the problem can be. Do I need to go to the dealer and spend the big $$ to fix that? Thanks |

I dont believe its any major damage myself...then again i have an auto.
If you were scratching thru your gears I would have to say take that thing in asap. It might be your linkage, or your transmission is out of allignment.. Im just taking my best shots, maybe someone else can give you a definate answer. And I do know this.... Unless its under warrenty dont go to the dealer. If it is Id just go straight there and even skip posting here.. best of luck to u. |

prob just need new shifter bushings they are infamous for going bad in the cold. It's a good upgrade anyway to switch to poly urethane.

Definitely check your shifter bushings and shift linkage.

hmmm, hopefully it's not the same thing that happened to my car. Check the bushings like a few other people said. how many miles are on your car??
