if you paint your own car in your garage FIRST MAKE SURE YOU DONT HAVE A PROPANE WATER HEATER IN THERE, if you do and the pilot light comes on while youre painting you will have a flash fire and blow your self up.most body shops will rent you a booth for a day or so.anyways if youre going to paint just your car its not really worth buying all the shit if you dont have it yet. but if you do want to make some money off of it then go ahead and pick the stuff up. but beafore hand i would deffinately reccomend a college class it will help you alot. also if you are worried about how the paint will come out, do all the prepp and primer work your self then have a paint shop just spray the final coat. that would be the best thing to do for a first time. because it will save you money, look better (hopefully), be faster than having a shop do evrything, give you some experience, and reduce the chance of a "professional" shop messing your car up.
oh yea if you have the money just buy a junk car that you could practice painting with then once you feel confident just hit your good car up. |

two words...old post.
oh yea and for joey blow, no auto body shop is gonna rent u a booth for the day. thats ridiculous. second, dont do prep work urself and then have them paint the car, might as well just tell the guy u dont trust him to his face, so yes now hes gonna fuck ur paint up. third, i have never seen in any home a hot water heater in the garage. infact i tihnk that it might be against code in nj, also im pretty sure that the pilot light doesnt go out. so yea... |

Actually body shops do rent out paint booths for a day. It's common practice, they just don't do it when they are swamped. In fact at a very nice body shop in New Orleans it cost 200 a day last time I checked when I was looking to paint my own car. I don't think you would piss off the painter if you did your own prep work, he will just think you are trying to save some cash. It doesn't make sense if a painter fucks up the paint job, because it would just be him spraying it again if he fucks it up, not to mention then he would have to prep it on top of respraying it. I don't know of any body shop that does not give you a warranty on the paint job. If they don't then you should assume their work is shit and they can't gaurentee it. And finally a lot of houses have hot water heaters in garages. Most garages that have built onto the house have the hot water heater located in them, and usually they have the washer and dryer in there also. Hell in Cali almost every house is like that. My Aunts house in Connecticut has a water heater in the garage also.

when i was gonna paint my car i went on the itnernet and found this website. it was a long ass article by a guy who collects porches and older cars and repaints them himself. he said he made alot of mistakes in the beginning but the more he painted the more he learned. and he gave a reallylong and comprehensive article on what to do and what not to do and also what equipment to use. it was pretty helpful

[/quote] my cousin has owned a body shop for the last 15 years and has never once rented out any of his three booths, thier never that slow. esp once winter comes around. as for the hot water heater in a garage, ive still never seen one, and i have moved a lot, maybe in older homes or in other states, but im almost positive in nj u cant have one in ur garage. the last four houses ive lived in have all been in the basement. either way tho,the pilot is always on, that was the main point i was gettin at. |

alrighgt i realize that we shouldnt give a fuck about a water heater and where its at but...why in the hell would you put it in the garage, where there are vehicles housing gasoline and oil not to mention the ignition process, if thereis a risk of shit blowing up? i would imagine you shuold be worrying about that and not about shit blowing up when you go to paint. besides a garage would realistically be a bad place to paint unless you did alot of cleaning. there is so much dust on the floor and everywhere..itll jump up into the air and mix with the paint because of static electricity. you can handle that though, NOT BY WETTING THE FLOOR DOWN connecting a ground wire from a part of your car (frame, something like that) and connecting that to the floor...this will elimnate static elctricity. if you wet shit down, itll evaportate and get into your paint while you are workin and the product wont be as clean. so unless you plan to take some rpecautions and shit, just go to a paint booth.

Like I said before, MAACO! If you need prep work before having the car painted, get the prep work done somewhere else, then just take the car to Maaco to have it sprayed. They have a couple different paint qulity options.
Check it out: Maaco Paint Options I'll be paying a guy $250 to come and fix the rust near the rear fenders; (where all Hondas get cancr)...then I'm taking my car to Maaco. They told me it would be about $575 to have it painted.
