I don?t know a whole a lot about engines or the millions of differences between them, how much does an OBD-I cost? Also how much HP does it produce? Would you add all the vtec stuff onto it? Does that help the engine out? A lot of noob questions, so I?m sorry for that. One more, what is a "SYI" ( I think thats what its called) is that a chip?
Your serisouly gonna need to read up and do some of your own research to see what is out there.
How much do you have to spend, how much time do you have, what do you want outta the car, etc??

Lots of questions that need to be answered first.

OBD1 means on board diagnostics, has to do with emissions etc...
There are many options for you to consider.Your HP question cannot be answered since you have no clue what motor you want.Vtec is not like an oil that you can just add to it,like you make it sound like.

Check these out...

If you have emissions regulations i'd suggest getting a 92-95 and swap in a OBD-0 or a OBD-1 motor.

Swapping a OBD-2 CAN lead to many problems regarding emissions and other stuff. Generally 5th gens are easier to work on also.
1. OBD-0 motors are worthless, they are old and abused.
2. Swapping in an older motor into a newer car isn't legal for emissions.
3. You can swap in an OBD2 motor no problem, just run OBD1 electronics.

I'd go with a 92-95 because its easier to work with OBD1, and living where I do in CA, more things are legal on OBD1 cars.

Yeah it all depends which one you like best. I like the
92 through 00 civics best.

Definitaly read those links that civichb posted up.
They explain the whole vtec thing.

You have to remember that lots of things affect HP numbers.

Age, condition of the block and internals, the oil you're using, Spark plugs/wires, the condition of the clutch, tranny, axles, tires etc.

as stuff gets older and more worn the number of actual HP that you're putting down to the pavement dramatically decreases.

So i can tell you that a 1st Gen OBD-0 B16A is supposed to be putting out 160 hp to the flywheel... but most of those motors are at or around 150k now, and have been heavily modified... so once again its really hard to give you an actual number.

good little rule to remember though is...

you lose 10% of your hp through a 5spd tranny and upwards of 20% through an auto.

right... but try putting a OBD-2 Motor in a CRX and you run into a shitload of wiring and potential problems on top of the fact that you prolly wont pass emissions.

Yeah, but into a 92-95 it's simple. Plus, if you have the entire harness including ECU plugs, it's simple to swap OBD2 into anything.

yea hence why i recommended the 5th gen.. cause its one of the easiest cars to mod.

if you get a Full OBD-2 swap all you need is a Boomslang harness and you're good to go.

*edit:

Plus wiring for the knock sensor and Vtec lines and such yadda yadda
