First off, im new to the forum. But I have been reading around on it for a week or so, and I love all the helpful and wonderful information that you guys have posted on here. And all the help noobs like me get from guys that KNOW what they are doing.

Now back to the topic:

I can get '92-'95 civic EX for a little under 2k

but what I want to know is, should I save another 1.5k and get a '96-'98 year civic EX?

Is it worth the money for the newer style car?

Basically, I want to do basic engine mods and car mods, just to make the stock car, run better and make it a little faster. Then after I have done all the basic car mods, like shocks, intake, stuff like that. In a year or two, I might go with a new engine, however I would like vtech. So im not sure if a '92-'95 year would be good for vtech or not, I know anything is possible with lots of money, but im a freshmen in college working 2 part time jobs, and so money is tight.

Thanks for the help!

-Stephen

Stephan. It all really boils down to personal preferance. Do you want a hatch? a sedan? a coupe? What options did you want it to have? I am personally not a fan of the early 6th gens. I own a 99 sedan ex. Seriously, if you plan to swap then just get whatever suits you. If you are going to want a sunroof, your going to have to look for an ex or si model. If it was me doing it all over again, I would be hunting for a nice 92-95 hatch SI. I could care little about the motor in it. It just has the most interior features.

Clif notes: If you want to swap, get whatever looks the way you want it. If you plan on keeping the engine, get an ex or SI model (note 96-98 has no si model)

Sorry, about not being detailed. I want a EX coupe. If I did do a swap someday, would a 92-95 be a better year? or 96-00? Is it worth 1.5k more for me to buy a 96-00 or just save the 1.5k for HP mod's for the 92-95?

Well im a 5th gen kinda guy, but these years have aged and fast. What are your long term goals? HP, N/A or Turbo, etc.. Narrow it down to where you want your car to be in the end.

If you have emissions regulations i'd suggest getting a 92-95 and swap in a OBD-0 or a OBD-1 motor.

Swapping a OBD-2 CAN lead to many problems regarding emissions and other stuff. Generally 5th gens are easier to work on also.

Well, I dont think I will ever have an END to the car lol. But over 170 HP would be nice, and keep AC and PS. I sorta want the car to have almost the sleeper style, where it looks stock, but its not ;-) So the outside will not have to much done to it. Maybe some halo lights, fog lights, tinted windows.. maybe even keep stock wheels or just 15" racing rims. Now if the 92-95 easyer to work on, that is a big plus. But if its going to be so out of date then thats not good. I want a car that I can get 5 or so years out of. Or is that insane thinking?

I personally love the 5th gens. Personaly preference though. I think you should save your pennies and get the newer car. Get something with less miles less wear. Your not planning on doing major mods right away so OBD-I vs OBD-II shouldn't be that big of an issue.

Also it's VTEC not VTECH. A lot of people get bent out of shape over that. Just an FYI.

I don?t know a whole a lot about engines or the millions of differences between them, how much does an OBD-I cost? Also how much HP does it produce? Would you add all the vtec stuff onto it? Does that help the engine out? A lot of noob questions, so I?m sorry for that. One more, what is a "SYI" ( I think thats what its called) is that a chip?
