When you say it's going to die out, what exactly happens. Does if feel like its going to stall out? Is there power loss? Does it feel like the motor is working when you put the peddle down, and it just doesn't move? You gotta give us a little more info so that we can narrow down the problem.

Took spark plugs out, the top of the plugs were covered in oil substance, but the tips of the plugs were dry. Any ideas? It doesn't smell like gas.

Do a compresion check if you are worried about the oil on the plugs,But it is probally leaking around the spark plug journal seals. To check your timing there are 4 grooves in you crank pully, line the groove that is on the right by itself up to the arrow on the timing belt cover, then look at your cam gear make sure the lines on the cam gear line up with the head,if not turn your crank with a 17 mm one full turn until the marks on the crank line up again then look at you cam gear again. If not then your car is out of time. Also check the rotor button in the dist cap make sure it is not slippin.I hope I helped some how.
