If you read my last post you will have found out what my choice was to tune my 98 honda civic ex. I decided against the engine swap and want to turbo my SOHC.
So let me begin with how little I know about turbochargers. I know that the exhaust spins a turbine which compresses air that is crammed into the cylinders for extra power. Thats about it. So here are a couple of noob questions. 1. Do the kits include everythign that you need to boost your engine? 2. I heard that you somtimes need to build up your engine for higher PSI, what does this mean and what does it inculde? 3. What manufactuars are the best and have good reviews? 4. How much will the intire project cost? Estimate |

1. not generally. most come with an fmu and a map diffuser, which personally i dont like. I would get engine management and some injectors if i were going to build a boosted motor.
2. Its not about higher psi, its about how much hp you want to make. building the motor would include, sleeves, pistons, rods, valves and springs and retainers. 3. personally as for kits, the best that i have found for a decent amount of money would be a rev-hard. The greddy kits are cheaper, but come with lousy turbos. also i have personally seen the blue box destroy motors. 4. Depends how far your going to get into it. without building the motor id say right at 3500...if you do the labor and tuning. and probably like 4g;s if you dont. |

I would not be doing the work myself, I have a friend who is a mechanic that would do it for cheap though. I would like to get around 200 whp out of it and have a boost controller.
1.How much can I boost my stock motor befor doing sleeves, rods, etc? 2.sleeves, pistons, rods, valves and springs and retainers- What manufactures are good, how much for an estimate for parts and install? 3. What is a good manufacturer for fuel managment systems and boost conrollers, estimate on prices? BTW I have 98 civic ex stock, I want 200whp after turbo, would like boost conroller, and I need something that is as reliable as my Honda engine is. |

1. i would say making 200hp would be about the limit of stock rods and pistons, for a single cam. the rods are toothpicks compared to a b series rod.
2. sleeves: golden eagle, pistons: cp, rods: crower or scat, valves: supertech, springs and retainers: rocket motorsports. 3. Best bet on EMS is convert to obd1 and run hondata. |

EMS = engine management system. This can be a chipped ecu (hondata) or an entire ecu replacement (AEM)
obd1 = on board dianostics version 1 obd0 =1989-1991 cars obd1 = 1992-1995 cars obd2 (or usually called obd2a) = 1996-1998 obd 2b = 1999-2000 cars obd is just the amount and type of sensors that got added onto each obd year. So far you cant chip obd2+ ecu's this is why you have to convert to a obd1 ecu which usually only consist's of a conversion harness and an ecu FMU= fuel managment unit (a cheap way to get the results of a full EMS psi = pounds per square inch (boost) |

[/quote] Ehhh... Im kinda skeptical about that particular kit. I just helped a friend of mine install one into his 98 EX and he has run into a couple problems. First off, the kit is advertised as being all-inclusive with no extra parts to buy; not so. We did have to purchase a $90 voltage clamp. Also, the mounting bracket on the downpipe broke off completely after 2 weeks of driving it, not abusing it. The tech support people have been fairly rude and unhelpful as well. Thats my 2?.
